Lost in time

Many years ago there was an attraction on the Blue Ridge Parkway called Mahogany Rock Cable Car.  It stayed open a few years, but went bankrupt.  It centered around a cable car that travelled between two peaks in Alleghany County NC, and also was a location where vacation mountain homes were built....It is all gone now, and few remember or recall it...there are remnants of the attraction and there are pictures available, but it would be great to hear of stories from those who recall it.

  1. Yes indeed, there was a cabin owned by an Uncle and friends in the path of the cable car, that had to be condemned when the cable path was cut in. Very little remains of the cabin now and all the land is owned by the State (part of Stone Mtn Park). A friend recently hiked back up in there and took pictures of the remnants of the cabin. Sad. So many great memories of fun times up there on weekends, in all kinds of weather including snow. You could even smell moonshine coming from somewhere. This was about 1968. :-)

  2. I visited the overlook several times with my Aunt and Uncle. We never rode the cable car, but it was a sight to behold back then. I did not know what happened to it but I knew it was gone.
